Our Strategic Approach
Expansion from the core

Pursuit of potential inorganic growth opportunities to help enhance the competitive position of the VM Group’s core business, financial services. These include retail banking, investment banking, asset management, pension fund management, money transfer/remittance, insurance, and property services. This core focus significantly improves the chances of success given the existing experience and strength in these areas.

Expansion through technology

Pursuit of potential inorganic growth opportunities involving the development and practical application of disruptive technologies to help accelerate the VM Group becoming a market leader in the core products and services it offers.

Expansion through partnership

Preference for the pursuit of potential inorganic growth opportunities through partnership, even if the VM Group is a minority equity partner, especially from a risk management  standpoint. These must involve policy making inputs (E.g. Board seats) and opportunities to become a majority equity partner over time, if desired. Potential partners must be reputable and competent, demonstrate both cultural and strategic fit, and have a strong competitive presence in their market.

Expansion in the region

Having already expanded to the US, UK and Canada, the VM Group’s strategic focus has now shifted to expansion within the region, Latin America and the Caribbean specifically. This region has become more attractive for growth opportunities in recent times due to correspondent banking relationship challenges and the withdrawal of dominant foreign owned banks, which have forced indigenous players to consolidate their businesses through partnerships.

The primary role of the SIU is to execute on the VM Group’s strategic plan to accelerate the profitability growth of its core businesses through a complementary inorganic approach. The plan is to expand the VM Group’s footprint both locally and across the LATAM and Caribbean region through one or more of the following inorganic growth strategies:

  • Mergers: An agreement that unites two existing companies into one new company.
  • Acquisitions: When one company purchases a part, most, or all the shares of another company
to gain control of that company.
  • Partnerships: A formal arrangement by two or more parties to manage and operate a business
    and share its profits.
  • Strategic Alliances: An arrangement between two companies to undertake a mutually beneficial
project while each company retains its independence.

Ideally, equity stake acquisitions within the 20% – 40% range preferred to attain an Associate Company status (Inclusive of at least 1 Board seat per 10% shareholding). Equity stake acquisitions in excess of 40% considered on a case-by-case basis.
